Interview with Robin Schumacher Discussing Calpont's InfiniDB

I got a chance to sit down with Calpont's new VP of Products, Robin Schumacher last week to discuss the announcement of their new open source column-oriented database, InfiniDB. To listen to the interview, click on the embedded link below.

Robin has also posted part one of a two part technical article on InfiniDB in the DevZone. You can check out the article here.

You can also get "up close and personal" with InfiniDB when Robin delivers a free webinar on the advantages of column oriented databases for analytics, high performance query systems and data warehousing next month. Register here.

For more info on what Calpont is up to with InfiniDB, check out their community .org site here.

SSH Tunneling in Workbench 5.2.6 Alpha

Given the announcement earlier this week of an updated release of the actively developed MySQL Workbench 5.2, I thought I'd give it a quick look...

Install on Windows went without a hitch.

One thing I noticed, which I don't remember being previously available in MySQL GUI tools, is the ability to connect to a remote MySQL server via SSH tunneling.

Below is a screen shot:

Well done! A small, but significant addition for folks that require SSH to connect to their systems.

I did notice that the design in Workbench involves selecting "Standard TCP/IP over SSH" from the drop down and then providing credentials in a more "form" oriented layout. An "SSH" tab like we see in Navicat or SQLyog might be more familiar for some folks. (Also, a minor note, no "browse" button next to the "Path to SSH key file" option.)

I know that 5.2 is still in active development, but the functionality in regards to SSH looks good to go...with maybe just a few tweaks to the connections dialog :)

MySQL Replication and SQL Server High Availability

Thanks for everyone that attended today's webinar, "MySQL for the SQL Server DBA"...we had a great turnout and lots of great questions!

As I mentioned, the slides and a playback file will be made available here shortly

I think one area that begs a more in-depth look is MySQL Replication and how it can be used as a replacement or building block for creating similar setups like SQL Server Replication, Log Shipping, Database Mirroring or Windows Failover Clustering.

Our schedule is pretty tight for the next few weeks, er months...but we'll see about squeezing it in somewhere.

In regards to using MySQL w/ Windows Failover Clustering, we do have a paper that walks you through the fundamentals here. But, we will go deeper on the topic in an upcoming webinar.

Finally, don't forget Iggy is going to be showing us how to build MySQL on Windows later this month. Sign up here.

MySQL for the SQL Server DBA Webinar

If you are SQL Server DBA interested in comparing "apples to apples" with MySQL... tomorrow's free webinar will be worth checking out. Windows/SQL Server vet Mike Frank and I will be running through the feature sets of both products and sorting out functional equivalents. (And yes, there will be some apples to oranges comparisons as well!) We'll be covering security, log shipping/replication, datatypes, partitioning and clustering just to name a few.

It's not too late to sign up for this and the rest of the "MySQL on Windows" webinar series, either...

Register for tomorrow's webinar here

View the upcoming webinars scheduled in the rest of the "MySQL on Windows" series here

As an added bonus, will be giving away MySQL t-shirts in exchange for answering trivia.

See you there!
